Piako Botanicals Purple Reign is a seedling bred by us and now in its third year. It is a captivating decorative seedling with lush, densely packed blooms and broad, gently rippled petals that catch the eye from across the garden. It grows tall and sturdy, holding its flower heads upright on long strong stems and adds a rich, jewel-like presence to any high-end floral design.

This variety features beautifully structured, loosely arranged flowers in a luminous magenta-purple tone, carrying a deep, velvety richness at the shadowed centre as they mature. Under natural and studio lighting alike, it holds its rich purple tone remarkably true, rather than washing out or shifting pink — a quality that makes it especially prized for photography and styled arrangements. As the season progresses, its broad, flat petals catch the changing light, giving each full-bodied blossom an ethereal, multi-dimensional depth in the field.

As a cut flower, it offers a fantastic vase life and a distinct, velvety richness that pops effortlessly against paler blooms, making it an inspired choice for modern bridal bouquets and elegant late-summer arrangements.

Features:

  • Type: Decorative

  • Bloom Size: Small to Medium (approx. 9cm – 12cm)

  • Height: Approx. 0.9m – 1.2m

  • Best for: Cut flowers, artistic floral design, and mixed garden borders

  • Colour: Deep magenta-purple with a darker, velvety centre

Growing Dahlia Tubers in New Zealand

Below are some answers to frequently asked questions about growing dahlias. You can also download our handy Dahlia Growing Guide here.

  • Plant dahlia tubers in New Zealand from late spring once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. In most regions, this is typically between October and December.

  • Plant tubers horizontally about 10 to 15cm deep in well-draining soil, with the growing eye facing upwards. Choose a sunny position and allow enough space between plants for airflow as they grow.

  • Dahlias grow very well in New Zealand conditions, especially in sunny, sheltered spots with free-draining soil. They are well suited to both home gardens and cut flower growing.

  • Yes. All Piako Botanicals dahlia tubers are selected for their performance in the garden and as cut flowers. Many varieties produce long, strong stems that are ideal for harvesting and arranging.

  • In colder or wetter areas, lifting tubers over winter can help prevent rot and improve performance the following season. In milder regions, they can often be left in the ground if drainage is good.

  • All tubers are grown, lifted, divided, and stored by hand on our Waikato flower farm. We only sell varieties we grow ourselves, so you can plant with confidence.
