Laughing Lizzy (often sold or spelled as "Laughing Lizza") is the exact same dahlia variety that gained the nickname "Monster Mouth”. Originally, the plant arrived in New Zealand and the US as a mislabeled tuber from a Dutch bulb supplier. Because it lacked a formal, recognised cultivar name from the original distributor, growers began calling it "Monster Mouth".

This variety features blooms in a vibrant magenta with rich wine coloured flecks. Laughing Lizzy is a small decorative-form dahlia admired for its cheerful, multi-tonal colouring and compact blooms. A prolific flowering variety.

Growing Dahlia Tubers in New Zealand

  • Plant dahlia tubers in New Zealand from late spring once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. In most regions, this is typically between October and December.

  • Plant tubers horizontally about 10 to 15cm deep in well-draining soil, with the growing eye facing upwards. Choose a sunny position and allow enough space between plants for airflow as they grow.

  • Dahlias grow very well in New Zealand conditions, especially in sunny, sheltered spots with free-draining soil. They are well suited to both home gardens and cut flower growing.

  • Yes. All Piako Botanicals dahlia tubers are selected for their performance in the garden and as cut flowers. Many varieties produce long, strong stems that are ideal for harvesting and arranging.
