Growing Dahlia Tubers in New Zealand

  • Plant dahlia tubers in New Zealand from late spring once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. In most regions, this is typically between October and December.

  • Plant tubers horizontally about 10 to 15cm deep in well-draining soil, with the growing eye facing upwards. Choose a sunny position and allow enough space between plants for airflow as they grow.

  • Dahlias grow very well in New Zealand conditions, especially in sunny, sheltered spots with free-draining soil. They are well suited to both home gardens and cut flower growing.

  • Yes. All Piako Botanicals dahlia tubers are selected for their performance in the garden and as cut flowers. Many varieties produce long, strong stems that are ideal for harvesting and arranging.

  • In colder or wetter areas, lifting tubers over winter can help prevent rot and improve performance the following season. In milder regions, they can often be left in the ground if drainage is good.

  • All tubers are grown, lifted, divided, and stored by hand on our Waikato flower farm. We only sell varieties we grow ourselves, so you can plant with confidence.
